Ryan Coogler Wants to Make an All-Female 'Black Panther' Spin-off
We NEED this to happen.
Imagine: the indomitable women of Wakanda starring in their very own motion picture.
It's something we'd most certainly pay to see, and if Black Panther director, Ryan Coogler has his way, we might see it come life. During an interview earlier this week at Canne with film critic Elvis Mitchell, the director was asked if the women in the movie were as important as the male characters. Of course, the answer was yes.
"I think you could argue they are more important," said Coogler. "There's a whole section of the film where T'Challa is out of the movie and you're just following the women." Adding that one of his favorite moments in the film is when it focuses on the women's response to T'Challa being overthrown. "That's one of my favorite parts of the movie when I watched it, and I didn't expect that," he added. "That part of the movie you feel like you're watching something fresh and new," Coogler continued. "That part of it was exciting."
When asked if he'd consider making a spin-off with the women of the film, the answer was also a affirmative. "Oh man," he said "That would be amazing if the opportunity came up. They did it in the comic-book version."
We most definitely agree, and it looks like Shuri (Letitia Wright) is already on board.
We can only imagine how fierce and downright amazing an entire film centered on the Dora Milaje would be. Fingers crossed that it happens in the future, but for now we'll continue to obsess over Black Panther, which is set for a home release this month. If you haven't already, check out some deleted scenes from the film.
