Lagos government advocates development of indigenous fashion
Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture (LCAC), Idowu Johnson, has advocated a return to the roots when indigenous fashion was given attention in the fashion industry.
Johnson stated this, at the weekend, when he led the management of LCAC to participate in the second Ile Ka’aro Ojiire Fashion Week 2022 Stakeholder’s meeting held at the Banquet Hall, June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.
He said that the fashion week would also serve as a pathfinder to promote the fashion industry, skills acquisition and empowerment for gainful employment.
The Coordinator of the event, Adewale Atepe, said that the fashion week is a celebration of the Yoruba fashion culture.
“Anything culture emanated from the South-West. This means that we must stand up to take our rightful position when it comes to indigenous fashion being part of our culture.
He cited how the Badagry area of Lagos State is popular for shoes, belts, handbags and clothing made from crocodile skin, saying that this is just one of the raw materials that are in abundance in different localities across the southwestern states.
Earlier, the Ogun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mrs Motunrayo Khadijat Adeleye Oladapo, had sought the cooperation of her counterparts in South-West states to see to the realisation of the “From Farm To Fashion” week event.
