The Secrets Of Face Steaming And It Benefits In Skincare

Every time you go for a facial, you might have wondered why your face is steamed at each appointment.

For a long time, steam has been used for relaxation and rejuvenation. This is why today, you’ll find that it is used in spas, saunas, and beauty parlours to create a warm atmosphere that helps you relax.

However, in skincare, the benefits of facial steaming don’t end at just relaxation. You’ll find all you need to know about face steaming, its health benefits and how to steam your face at home right here.

Benefits of Face Steaming

Face steaming possesses several benefits for your skin, including:

  • Eases blackhead removal

Before you begin extracting blackheads and other growths on your skin, your skin needs to be properly prepped. Steaming softens your skin, loosening oil and buildup in the skin’s pores, making it a lot easier to extract these plugs.

However, it is essential to not go about picking these blackheads; instead, invest in a stainless-steel loop-style extractor for gentle at-home removals

  • Allows for better product penetration

Steaming your face before applying skincare products opens up your skin’s pores allowing for better absorption of products. The heat and moisture from the steam make the skin permeable and ready to accept the toners, serums and moisturisers you apply.

  • Improves hydration

Water is necessary for proper skin hydration, and face steaming provides your skin with much-needed water.

So, use steam and follow up with a moisturiser and serum to plump up the skin and improve its water retention capacity, especially if you have dry skin.

  • Plumps skin

Your skin needs proper blood flow to build collagen and elastin, giving it a plump, bouncy look. Face steaming improves blood flow and circulation, causing your skin to look firmer and younger.

Steaming Your Face At Home

Face steaming shouldn’t be left for just facial days; you can steam your face right in your home.

There are three ways to do this; you can either:

  • Buy a facial steamer and follow the instructions written on the box or

  • Try the hot towel technique: Put a clean small towel in a bowl and pour hot water (not boiling) over the towel. Wring out the excess water from the towel and place it on your face. To know when the temperature’s right, remember that you should be able to hold the towel without it being too hot for your hands.

  • And Steam with a bowl: Pour some hot water into a large bowl, and place your face over the steam covering both the towel and bowl. The towel traps the steam ensuring your face collects all the moisture it needs.

However, if you are prone to redness or rosacea or have broken capillaries, steaming might not be right for you, so it’s best to stay away. Sensitive skin types should also stay away from face steaming.

For less sensitive skin types, consider steaming two to three times weekly.

As always, be sure to consult your dermatologist before making adjustments to your skincare routine and consult an expert if you feel unsure of what to do.
