I’m constantly pressured to change my music style –Yinka Davies

Actress and singer, Yinka Davies, says she has often been under pressure to change her style of music.

In an interview, she said, “Plenty of times, I have been pressured to change my style of music. But, I have never allowed such pressure to get to me. Even if it gets to me, I have to like the sound and style of the music. It has to resonate with me.

“I am not a rapper but I like certain kinds of rap music. However, I don’t allow people to pressure me. It is a personal decision for me. It is about my work and life, and I must be accountable for what I do and how I do it. It is something that has been going on with me for years.”

On how people can be encouraged to listen more to jazz music, Davies said, “It is an acquired taste and it is something one has to have before one can share with others.”

Asked if she feels fulfilled at this stage of her career, the entertainer said, “I am grateful for every opportunity to be part of people’s lives and share experiences. Fulfillment only comes from God. It does not come from man or one’s achievements. Loving God completely is the only time I feel fulfilled.”

Davies also noted that physical looks have always been a prerequisite for being selected for movie roles. She said, “The desire to pick beautiful actors is something that has been going on for years. It has just come back full cycle. It was like that in the past. How a person looks physically mattered back then, especially the height. An actor has to be tall to get selected for movie roles. These days, the requirements may not be the same as it was in the past but it is still there.”

Speaking on the new generation of artistes that she will like to work with, she said, “I like Wande Coal, Wizkid and Burna Boy. I like the way they deliver on the beats they are given.”
