Man jailed for insulting father

Fwangmun Danung, 35, was sentenced to a year in jail by a Jos Magistrates' Court on Thursday for insulting and threatening his father.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Danung was punished by Judge Mr Tapmwa Gotep after pleading guilty.

Gotep offered him the alternative of paying N10,000 or serving six months in prison for insulting his father and additional six months without paying a fine for frightening his father.

The court stated that the decision will serve as a deterrence to anyone who would do such actions.

Previously, the prosecuting counsel, Inspector Frank Alex, informed the court that the complainant, Othniel Danung, reported the crime to the Rantya Police Station on December 26, 2022.

According to reports, the inmate took his father out of the house and labeled him a worthless and irresponsible guy.

According to the prosecution, the felon lit the gas and threatened to burn down the residence.

In addition, the inmate asked that his father pay him N200,000.

He stated that the offense is punishable under Sections 377 and 379 of the Plateau State Criminal Code Law.

In other news, a painter, Obinnah Mikel, was charged on Thursday in a Grade I Area Court in Karu, Abuja, with stealing building supplies worth N425,000.

Mikel, 35, of Jabi, Abuja, was accused with stealing by the police.

Mr Ade Adeyanju, the prosecution's lawyer, informed the court that Bakare Demilade of Agades Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja, reported the incident to the Maitama Police Station.

Adeyanju informed the court that on January 24, the defendant went to Demilade's construction site in Wuse II, Abuja, and stole a cutting equipment worth N65,000 and a drilling machine worth N50,000.

He also claimed to have stolen two mobile phones worth N50,000 and Plaster of Paris supplies for N260,000, for a total of N425,000.

He claimed that the offense violated Section 287 of the Criminal Code.

According to the prosecution, the defendant was unable to provide a sufficient account of his actions during the police inquiry.

The defendant, on the other hand, pled not guilty to the accusation.

Mr Umar Mayana granted bail to the defendant with one surety and directed that the lawyers appear at the next adjournment to formalize the bail.

Judge continued the matter until March 6 for further consideration.
