NLC strike: Power outage in Abuja as electricity workers down tools
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company reported on Tuesday that the Nigeria Labour Congress's ongoing strike has caused a power outage throughout the state.
According to an AEDC management statement released on X, residents of Abuja should find strategies to handle the outage till electricity is restored.
"We are aware of the general power outage being experienced across our franchise as a result of the NLC's enforcement of the labour union's 2-day warning strike." We apologize for any trouble this has caused you, and we will continue to work with key stakeholders to reduce the impact of the strike on our customers.
"In the meantime, we recommend that you take the necessary precautions to effectively manage the outage." Please unplug sensitive electronic gadgets and appliances from power sources until power is restored.
"Through our official social media handles, we will continue to provide updates on developments regarding the impact of the strike action on our operations." Thank you for your patience and ongoing support during this difficult time. We will continue to serve you."
According to the PUNCH, power workers - the National Union of power Employees of Nigeria - have joined the NLC's two-day strike.
Recall that the NLC declared a two-day warning strike on Friday in a communique signed by its national president, Joe Ajaero, and Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, following the Tinubu-led administration's failure to dialogue and engage stakeholders within organized labor on efforts made to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal on the "poor masses."
Meanwhile, organized labor launched a day-long protest in August, shutting down major cities across the country.
Other reasons given by the NLC for mobilizing its members for the nationwide shutdown include police laying siege to the National Union of Road Transport Workers' national headquarters, alleged exploitation of workers' rights in Imo state, interference in trade union matters by the Abia State government, and the proposed demolition by the Federal Capital Territory's new minister, Nyesom Wike, among others.
