The acting Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, has directed special marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to find procedures for spotting intoxicated drivers on the highway.

Onyeme made the demand on Saturday in Asaba while commissioning the secretariat for special marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps Delta Sector Command.

The acting governor praised special marshals for constructing a suitable secretariat and thanked them for spending time to assisting FRSC in the difficult mission of rescuing Nigerian drivers and passengers from needless accidents.

According to him, "I would like to remind both the Road Safety Corps and marshals of their basic responsibility of limiting motorist speed and other types of misdemeanor on our highways.

"Continue to discourage motorists from engaging in phone conversations while driving; such indiscipline frequently leads to avoidable accidents and unnecessary deaths.

"I applaud all of the special marshals in our zone for committing time to assisting the Federal Road Safety Corps in the difficult duty of protecting Nigerian drivers and passengers from preventable accidents and deaths.

"Marshals should continue to render the selfless services which have distinguished them among compatriots nationwide."

The acting governor, while commending the Special Marshals for their patriotic fervor in providing selfless services to save lives across the country, urged for more strict steps to prevent motorists from using illegal narcotics.

He stated, "Your sacrifices are appreciated by all well-meaning Nigerians." You have so ingrained yourself and your skill that the fear of Road Safety officers and marshals is gradually becoming the wisdom of drivers and other road users.

"But I am also aware that the significant concerns of drunk driving and driving under the influence of psychotropic medications, overloading, and the inability to utilize seat belts continue to exist despite the best efforts of the Road Safety Corps and marshals.

"This calls for renewed efforts to curb these excesses; do not relent your efforts."

Onyeme asked FRSC officials to use verbal restraint, particularly when traffic volume is high and the offence is minor.

Earlier, in an address, Idolor Odafe, Coordinator, Special Marshals RS5.2, Delta Sector Command, stated that the newly built office secretariat was the realization of a collective vision born out of a shared commitment to improving road safety infrastructure and supporting FRSC operations in the state.

Odafe stated that the secretariat demonstrates the unwavering dedication of Delta State's special marshals.

He emphasized that the members' resourcefulness and generosity, as seen by their unselfish contributions, enabled the secretariat to be established and completed.
