Don Jazzy Reveals His Passion for Drumming Inspired His Career in Music Production
Nigerian record producer and music executive Michael Collins Ajereh, widely known as Don Jazzy, has opened up about what inspired him to become a music producer. In a recent episode of the ‘On The Grind’ podcast, Don Jazzy shared that his deep love for music was the driving force behind his journey into production.
The Mavin Records founder revealed his impressive skills in multiple musical instruments, particularly the drum, which played a significant role in shaping his career. Speaking on his passion, Don Jazzy humorously mentioned that he is so in tune with drumming that he could even drum while engaging in intimate moments.
“I just went in [to production] and never looked back. I finished playing percussion, I moved to jazz drum. From the drum set, I moved to the bass guitar. At some point, I started learning the piano,” Don Jazzy said.
He added, “I started learning more instruments when I was in London and I realized that I wanted to be a producer. But originally, I liked playing drums and bass guitar…. I literally drum all the time. I do it during sex. I can even drum on a woman’s buttocks if I get the inspiration for a beat at that time.”
Don Jazzy also recalled the early days of his career when he lived in the studio with producers Altims and Baby Fresh for two years, dedicating himself to mastering his craft.
He began his journey as a producer in the UK while collaborating with JJC and the 419 Squad. In 2004, he co-founded Mo’ Hits Records alongside D’banj, serving as the label's in-house producer. Following the dissolution of Mo’ Hits in 2012, Don Jazzy established Mavin Records, where he currently serves as both CEO and lead producer.
Additionally, Don Jazzy was an in-house producer for American rapper Kanye West's GOOD Music from 2011 to 2013, further cementing his reputation as a global force in the music industry.
