Paul Scholes Questions Gabriel Martinelli’s Progression Under Mikel Arteta
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has expressed concerns over Gabriel Martinelli’s recent form, suggesting the Arsenal forward has taken a step back in his development under manager Mikel Arteta. Scholes made these comments while responding to Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher during the latest episode of The Overlap Fan Debate.
Martinelli, once touted as one of Arsenal’s brightest talents, was instrumental in the Gunners’ success during the 2022/23 season, scoring 15 goals across all competitions. However, his output dipped last season, with only eight goals to his name, and his struggles have continued this season, managing just four goals in 22 appearances so far.
Carragher was the first to point out Martinelli’s perceived stagnation, comparing him to Arsenal teammates Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard.
“I look at Martinelli and actually think probably three years ago when this team was just getting built, it felt like Odegaard, Saka, and Martinelli were all at the same sort of level, looked like they could go on and be top players,” Carragher said. “I think the other two have; I’m not sure about Martinelli.”
Scholes echoed this sentiment, adding:
“Yeah, it feels like he’s gone backwards a little bit. You thought a year, 18 months ago, ‘wow, what a player,’ and he has stalled a little bit. He’s still young, isn’t he? We said pre-season a centre-forward was always something that we felt Arsenal needed, and for some reason, I don’t think the manager did.”
Both pundits also emphasized the challenges Arsenal might face in finding solutions during the January transfer window, which often proves difficult to secure high-quality players.
Martinelli’s Journey: A Player in Transition?
Martinelli’s trajectory raises questions about the challenges of maintaining consistency at the highest level, particularly for young players. At his best, the Brazilian is a dynamic force, capable of dazzling runs, clinical finishes, and relentless pressing. However, his recent dip in form suggests he might be struggling to adapt to the evolving tactical demands of Arteta’s system or perhaps facing the natural fluctuations of a young player’s career.
While Saka and Ødegaard have established themselves as the creative and goal-scoring linchpins of Arsenal’s attack, Martinelli’s role has become less defined. Injuries, shifts in team dynamics, and added competition might also contribute to his reduced output.
Arsenal’s Dilemma: Support or Reinforcement?
For Arteta, the question becomes whether to give Martinelli more time to rediscover his form or seek reinforcements to maintain Arsenal’s competitive edge. January transfers are notoriously tricky, as Scholes pointed out, but the Gunners may need to explore their options to support Martinelli and bolster their attacking depth.
The potential for Martinelli to bounce back remains high. At just 22 years old, he has plenty of time to refine his game and reach the heights predicted for him. Consistent coaching, tactical clarity, and perhaps reduced pressure could be the keys to unlocking his full potential.
