Southampton Manager Russell Martin Keen to Retain In-Form Paul Onuachu

Southampton Manager Russell Martin Keen to Retain In-Form Paul Onuachu

Southampton manager Russell Martin has made it clear that he wants to keep Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu at the club, citing his recent impressive performances as vital to the team's ambitions this season.

Onuachu, who spent last season on loan at Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor, delivered an outstanding 15 goals in 21 league appearances. Despite his stellar form, Trabzonspor could not secure a permanent deal for the striker during the summer transfer window.

After a challenging start to the season, the 30-year-old has regained his form and is becoming a key player for the Saints. Speaking with The Echo, Martin praised Onuachu’s contributions and expressed optimism about his future at the club.

“He was respectful and then so in January I’m sure there will be a few people that are interested in him again,” Martin said. “I’m sure there will also be a few people kicking themselves that they clearly didn’t quite want him enough in the summer.

“For me, if Paul is happy, we’re really happy and we want him here as he can help us achieve what we want to achieve this season.”

What Do You Think? Should Southampton Keep Paul Onuachu?

Onuachu’s recent performances raise an interesting debate: Should Southampton build their team around him or consider selling if lucrative offers come in during the January window?

As fans, what would you prioritize?

  • Keeping a proven goal scorer who could drive the Saints’ promotion bid back to the Premier League?

  • Selling him for a significant fee to reinvest in strengthening other areas of the squad?

Also, how do you view Onuachu’s long-term role at the club? Can he sustain his form and lead Southampton to glory, or do you think his resurgence might attract offers too tempting to refuse?

Share your thoughts—should Southampton focus on making Onuachu the cornerstone of their attack, or would selling him in January be the smarter move?
