Nigerian doctors, nurses abroad are considering returning home

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, has revealed that successful Nigerian doctors, nurses, and health workers abroad are contemplating returning to Nigeria if the necessary infrastructure is provided.

During an interview on Channels Television's Sunday Politics, Pate emphasized the potential return of skilled healthcare professionals to Nigeria if the conditions are conducive. He acknowledged that despite the allure of better pay and welfare packages abroad, many health workers have chosen to remain in Nigeria to serve their country.

Pate highlighted the dedication of thousands of healthcare professionals who have opted to stay in Nigeria, recognizing their commitment to serving their communities. Additionally, he noted that some professionals choose to pursue training opportunities abroad with the intention of returning home to contribute their enhanced skills to the local healthcare system.

Addressing the phenomenon of healthcare worker migration, commonly referred to as "Japa," Pate emphasized that the government is actively working to create a conducive environment for healthcare professionals to practice in Nigeria. He acknowledged that the "Japa" phenomenon is not unique to Nigeria but rather a global trend.

Highlighting the importance of human resources in the healthcare sector, Pate emphasized that skilled professionals are the backbone of the industry. While hospitals play a vital role, it is the healthcare professionals who are essential for delivering quality care. Currently, there are approximately 300,000 healthcare professionals working across various cadres in Nigeria, including doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists.

Pate's remarks underscore the government's commitment to retaining and attracting skilled healthcare workers to Nigeria, ensuring the provision of quality healthcare services to the population. By addressing the challenges faced by healthcare professionals and improving the infrastructure within the healthcare sector, Nigeria aims to create a conducive environment that encourages the return and retention of its healthcare workforce
