Federal Government Allocates N12.7 Billion for Prepaid Meters in Army Barracks

In a significant move towards enhancing electricity distribution and accountability, the Federal Government has announced the release of N12.7 billion for the provision of prepaid meters in Army barracks across the nation.

Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, disclosed this development, highlighting that the allocated funds are part of the N40 billion set aside for the mass metering project. The statement was conveyed by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, on Monday, March 18, 2024.

As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, Minister Adelabu emphasized that the initial phase of the metering initiative is scheduled to span six weeks, paving the way for subsequent phases.

"The implementation of mass metering in army formations nationwide will provide accurate insights into monthly consumption patterns, facilitating precise billing procedures and simplifying collections," stated Minister Adelabu.

He further elucidated on the overarching objective, stating, "The primary aim is to eradicate estimated billing practices and usher in a new era of transparency and accountability. This initiative aligns with President's mandate outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritizing uninterrupted electricity supply for the armed forces and ensuring they receive adequate access to public utilities."

This proactive measure underscores the government's commitment to addressing longstanding challenges in the electricity sector while catering to the needs of essential institutions like the armed forces. With the implementation of prepaid meters, not only will billing accuracy be enhanced, but service delivery to military personnel will also be substantially improved, aligning with the nation's aspirations for progress and development.
