Controversial Social Media Critic, Verydarkman, Released from Police Custody in Abuja

Controversial Social Media Critic, Verydarkman, Released from Police Custody in Abuja

In a recent turn of events, Martins Otse, the outspoken social media critic popularly known as Verydarkman, has been released from police custody in Abuja. The confirmation of Otse's release came from his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, who took to social media on Sunday to share the news.

"After five days of back and forth, we have secured VDM’s release. Thank you to everyone that made this happen especially Sowore, Kefiano & VDM’s wonderful lawyers," Adeyanju posted on X.

The 27-year-old critic, according to former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, was detained under allegations of cyberbullying. Sowore voiced concerns about the misuse of police power and collusion with influential figures in the country to suppress dissenting voices.

This isn't the first brush with the law for Otse. Earlier this year, in January, he found himself in a similar situation. Reports emerged that he was arrested following a petition filed by actress Tonto Dikeh over comments made regarding the late Nigerian singer Mohbad's case.

Sowore reiterated his stance on the misuse of power by authorities, emphasizing that this incident marks the second time the critic has been arrested within the year. The allegations against Otse stemmed from his outspoken criticism, including accusations directed at Dikeh and her colleague Iyabo Ojo, suggesting they were 'chasing clout' following the death of the aforementioned singer.

Otse's release sparks conversations about freedom of expression, the role of social media in activism, and the balance of power between citizens and authorities. It underscores the importance of accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies, as well as the need to protect individuals' rights to voice their opinions without fear of reprisal.

As Otse steps back into the limelight, his experience serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by social media influencers, activists, and critics in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of digital discourse. It calls for continued vigilance in safeguarding fundamental freedoms and holding institutions accountable for upholding the rule of law.

In the wake of his release, the spotlight remains on Otse and others like him, who persist in speaking truth to power despite the risks. Their resilience underscores the power of dissent and the enduring pursuit of justice in the face of adversity. As we reflect on Otse's journey, let us not only celebrate his freedom but also reaffirm our commitment to defending the rights and liberties of all individuals in our society.
