Finidi eyes Enyimba’s NPFL ‘La Decima’
Finidi George, Enyimba's head coach, is increasing confident in his team's chances of retaining the Nigeria Premier Football League title at the end of the season, despite trailing leaders Enugu Rangers by two points, according to TalkTalk Nigeria Sports Extra.
The People's Elephant have won a record nine NPFL titles, and with seven more games left in the season, they aspire to make it ten. They are second in the table with 52 points after 31 games.
On Sunday, they improved their chances by drawing 1-1 against Sunshine Stars in Akure, due to a second-half goal by Chidiebere Nnachi, who cancelled out Promise Awosanmi's opener for the hosts.
Finidi acknowledged that the point was difficult to obtain, but hailed it as a necessary boost for their title challenge.
"It was a difficult one; let's say the game was 50-50, and I believe a draw is enough for us. They wanted to win, and we wanted to receive something from it. We didn't see many chances, but I believe a draw was adequate. I'm pleased with the one point we have here (Akure), and we will build on it," Finidi remarked following the game.
"I believe we have a chance to compete for the trophy again. We'll see how we can win at home. We will push till the end of the season. Others are also attempting to reach the same goal, but this is Enyimba; we will not give up."
With the draw at Akure, Finidi's side have 12 points on the road in the NPFL, and Enugu Rangers' 2-0 loss to Rivers United in Port Harcourt on Sunday increased their chances of finishing first.
They will face Rangers in the season's last game, which might decide the title, as well as Katsina United, Abia Warriors, Rivers, Bayelsa United, Sporting Lagos, and Plateau United.
