Wahab set for WBC silver title fight in Saudi
Oluwaseun Wahab, the WBO Africa champion, will battle unbeaten British boxer Mark Chamberlain for the World Boxing Council lightweight silver championship on the undercard of Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk's undisputed bout on May 18 in Saudi Arabia, according to TalkTalk Nigeria Sports Extra.
Wahab will face Chamberlain in a 10-round lightweight bout at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.
The Nigerian boxer has an excellent record of 23 wins and one loss, with 16 of his victories coming via knockout, while the Brit has an undefeated record of 15 wins and 11 KOs, ensuring an interesting matchup between the two boxers.
He is undefeated in Africa, having fought in Nigeria and Ghana, and his lone loss came in his UK debut against Liam Dillon at York Hall, Bethnal Green in London in 2022.
Wahab lost the bout by a majority decision. He has subsequently made up for it with an 11th round technical knockout victory over Sikiru Shogbesan, allowing him to defend his championship in the main event of the 'Rumble in Lasgidi' in 2023.
The WBO Africa super-featherweight champion will be looking to make it two wins in a row when he steps into the ring for the star-studded event in Saudi Arabia.
Wahab expressed confidence in his chances on social media on Monday, tweeting the whole bout card with the caption, "We plan, but God is the master planner." I am absolutely confident in this fight. Let's go, Africa!
"It has been a long journey and lots of up and down in my career but dreams do come true when you believe in yourself."
If Wahab defeats Chamberlain in the fight, he will become the third active Nigerian to possess a WBC silver belt, behind Efe Ajagba and Elizabeth Oshoba.
Meanwhile, in the main event, Usyk has emerged as the favourite after Fury failed to impress in his most recent bout against Francis Ngannou, winning on points.
However, the WBC champion is still optimistic in becoming the first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.
