Lagos State Terminates Contract for Kantagua Market Construction: What You Need to Know
The Lagos State Government has recently made a significant decision regarding the development of the Kantagua Market. In an effort to ensure transparency and efficiency in urban regeneration projects, the state government has terminated its contractual relationship with Bridgeway Global Project Limited, the consultant responsible for the construction of the market.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, made this announcement during an inspection of the designated land for the relocation of Ikeja Computer Village. According to him, the termination of the contract with Bridgeway Global Project Limited occurred over two years ago due to the contractor's failure to meet the agreed-upon terms.
It's crucial to note that any attempt by Bridgeway Global Project Limited or its representatives to collect fees or money from individuals for the development of the market is illegal following the termination of their contract. The management of the Kantagua project has been handed over to the Urban Development Department in the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, under the leadership of Bola Bello. All activities related to project control must adhere to the guidelines and regulations set forth by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
Regarding the concerns of subscribers who have paid Bridgeway Global Project Limited for shop allocations in the market, Dr. Babatunde assured that the state government would ensure refunds for any fees collected illegally. Proper identification and verification processes will be conducted to determine legitimate occupants and the amounts paid.
Moving forward, individuals are advised not to make any payments to Bridgeway Global Project Limited or its representatives, as they no longer represent the state government on this project. The Director of Urban Development, Bola Bello, and her team will now oversee the market project on behalf of the state government.
Furthermore, eight members of staff of Bridgeway Global Project Limited who were found collecting tolls and fees at the market gate have been directed to be arrested and prosecuted.
Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, emphasized the importance of adhering to environmental regulations and warned against any infringements or road blockages leading to the market.
It's worth mentioning that illegal structures within the market area will be removed to facilitate proper development.
In response to a petition filed by leaders of the market association, Ogunkelu Sylvester, the Chairman of the Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development in the State House of Assembly, along with other members, visited the market to conduct a fact-finding mission. The findings will be presented to the speaker for further action.
In conclusion, the termination of the contract with Bridgeway Global Project Limited signifies the state government's commitment to upholding accountability and ensuring the successful execution of urban development projects for the benefit of all stakeholders.
