Eze named in England’s Euro 2024 squad

Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton have been nominated to England's Euro 2024 team, with Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire, and James Maddison left out.

Winger Eze, 25, has only three caps for the Three Lions but impressed in Monday's 3-0 friendly victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina at St James' Park.

Wharton, 20, made his international debut as a substitute in that encounter.

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that Gareth Southgate's 26-man team did not include Manchester City attacker Grealish, Manchester United centre-back Maguire, or Tottenham playmaker Maddison.

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, and Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones all fall out after being included to the original 33-player shortlist.

It means Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw, who hasn't played since mid-February due to a hamstring injury, has been included.

England will meet Iceland in a friendly at Wembley Stadium on Friday, their final match before the tournament begins in Germany on Friday, June 14.

However, Quansah, 21, will continue in the squad for the game against Iceland in case there are any other defensive injuries.

"Luke has progressed really well in the last couple of days and we think he could have some involvement in the second group game," Southgate stated.

"You can take one gamble and that's a calculated gamble where we have enough evidence we believe it can pay off."
