Paris 2024 Olympics: Super Falcons bow out after losing to Japan
The Super Falcons of Nigeria dropped out of the women's football tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games following a 3-1 defeat over Japan.
Japan immediately relaxed into the game, pinning Nigeria back.
Chiamaka Nnadozie, the goalkeeper, made a fantastic save to deny the Japanese in the seventh minute.
Japan maintained their lead, with Osinachi Ohale making a crucial block nine minutes later.
The pressure paid off for the Asian champions as Chelsea forward Maika Hamano gave her team the lead in the 22nd minute.
Mina Tanaka doubled the lead ten minutes later.
The Super Falcons rallied back, with PSG's new addition Jennifer Echegini scoring three minutes before halftime.
In first-half stoppage time, Hana Kitagawa restored Japan's two-goal lead with a beautiful free kick.
In the second half, the Super Falcons dominated possession, while the Japanese sat back and attempted to counterattack.
Japan was awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute after Rasheedat Ajibade was found to have pulled an opponent within the box.
The decision was, however, reversed by the centre referee following a VAR review.
Nigeria finished at the bottom of Group C with 0 points after three games.
