Euro 2024: Spain, France, England, Netherlands battle for final spots

The Euro 2024 has reached its conclusion, with Spain, France, England, and the Netherlands vying for the remaining berths.

The four teams are nervous as they prepare for their semifinals on Tuesday and Wednesday, hoping to advance to the Euro 2024 final.

The Euro 2024 final will be held on Sunday, July 14, at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany.

Spain versus France:

The first semi-final match will take place today, Tuesday, at 8 p.m., Nigerian time.

Spain advanced to the last four after eliminating host nation Germany from the competition.

La Roja won 2-1 over Germany in the quarterfinals to go to the semi-finals.

France, on the other side, advanced to the semi-final stage after defeating Portugal.

Les Blues won the quarter-final tie against Portugal 5-3 on penalties after the game ended 0-0 after 120 minutes.

Speaking to TalkTalk Nigeria before of the Euro 2024 semi-finals, a sports commentator, Stanley Smart, said:

"Well, I expect a tough and close match between these two European powerhouses."

"Spain is the only team to have won all of their matches in the competition thus far. They are clearly the favourites to win the competition based on their performances.

"But you can't write off the French team. France's performances have not been impressive thus far, but they have world-class players and individual talents like Mbappe and Dembele, who, on their best days, can break any defense.

"They also have a strong midfield and defense, so I do not expect many goals in this match.

"I think the team that takes good chances in front of goal by converting it will win the match."

Netherlands versus England:

The second semi-final match will take place on Wednesday at 8 p.m., Nigeria time.

After eliminating Turkey from the tournament, the Netherlands advanced to the last four.

The Dutch squad won 2-1 over Turkey in the quarterfinals to go to the semi-finals.

England, meanwhile, advanced to the semi-final stage after defeating Switzerland.

After a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, the Three Lions defeated Switzerland 5-3 on penalties in the quarterfinals.

Making his forecast, Smart added: "Prior to the competition, many chose England as the favourites to win the Euro 2024. However, this has changed, with Spain currently largely seen as the favourite due to their perfect record of victories.

"They [England] will face the Netherlands, who many people do not anticipate to make it this far in the competition. I consider them the dark horse of this year's Euros.

"Their coach [Ronald Koeman] is a well-known, renowned manager who formerly coached Barcelona. So I expect them to give England a hard time.

"I believe the match, like Spain versus France, will be challenging and close. Any lapses or minor mistakes by any of the teams could result in a goal.

When asked to pick two teams that could participate in the Euro 2024 final, Smart replied, "This is a difficult question. To be honest, at this point in the competition, all four teams deserve to compete in the final.  To reach the semi-final of any major tournament is not easy.

"At this level, even minor errors can cost a team. However, based on their results so far in the competition, I believe Spain will edge France.

"As for England and the Netherlands, I believe they will compete closely. He added, "I give the Netherlands a 55 percent chance of winning and England a 45 percent chance."
