Boniface backs himself for African Player of the Year
Victor Boniface, a Bayer Leverkusen striker, believes he is the best candidate to win the African Player of the Year title in 2024.
Victor Osimhen, Boniface's compatriot, earned the accolade last year following a standout season with Napoli.
Ademola Lookman of Atlanta is the odds-on favorite to win this time around.
Lookman shined for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire, scoring three goals in seven matches.
The 26-year-old also helped Atalanta win the UEFA Europa League by scoring a remarkable hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.
Boniface has, however, put his name forward for Africa's best player award.
The 23-year-old had a fantastic season at Bayer Leverkusen last season.
He scored an incredible 21 goals and provided 10 assists across all competitions, playing an important role in Leverkusen's successful season, which included victories in the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal.
"Probably between myself and Lookman. "I will run for African Footballer of the Year because I believe in myself," he said boldly. "If it's just what we did last season, I'll pick myself," he told SportyTV.
