Eguavoen Warns Against Excluding Kelechi Iheanacho From Super Eagles’ Final Squad List
Former Super Eagles defender and coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has expressed strong disapproval over the possibility of Kelechi Iheanacho’s exclusion from the final squad list for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Head coach Eric Chelle recently unveiled an expanded 39-man squad list, a departure from the usual 23-man list, aimed at providing broader options ahead of the crucial fixtures. However, reports suggest that Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, might not make the cut for the final team.
Speaking during Monday Night Football, Eguavoen voiced his concern over Iheanacho’s potential exclusion, describing it as unfair.
“It’s not fair on Kelechi Iheanacho if Eric Chelle makes a 39-man list and he isn’t involved. If it’s a 23 or 25-man list, that’s fine,” Eguavoen said.
A Proven Talent at Risk of Being Overlooked
Iheanacho has been a consistent performer for both club and country, known for his creativity, goal-scoring abilities, and knack for delivering in high-pressure moments. Omitting a player of his caliber from such a broad list could be perceived as a lack of appreciation for his contributions.
Opinion: Is Iheanacho’s Exclusion Justifiable?
While Eric Chelle’s decision to expand the squad indicates a desire to keep his options open, dropping a player like Iheanacho raises questions. Are the alternatives genuinely better, or is this decision influenced by factors beyond performance?
If the Super Eagles are to succeed in the must-win games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, they will need all the experience and quality they can get. Iheanacho, who has delivered memorable moments for Nigeria in the past, surely deserves a spot to prove his worth.
What’s your take on this decision? Should Iheanacho be part of the final squad?
