Social Media Critic VeryDarkMan Dares Nigerian Authorities Over Arrest Warrant

Popular social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has boldly responded to a bench warrant issued for his arrest by a Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja.

The court order, reportedly issued by Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna on Thursday, March 13, 2025, stems from charges of “criminal defamation” against gospel artist Mercy Chinwo. The case followed VDM’s alleged defamatory remarks against the singer, which have since stirred heated reactions on social media.

The Court Order

According to TalkTalk Nigeria, the arrest warrant was issued after VDM failed to appear before the court despite a previous summons dated March 5, 2025. His absence was deemed disrespectful to the judicial process, prompting the magistrate to demand his immediate arrest upon his arrival in Nigeria.

VDM’s Defiant Response

Responding to the arrest warrant through his Instagram story, VDM, who is reportedly abroad, seemed unbothered by the development. In a rather daring tone, he challenged security agencies to arrest him at the airport upon his return to Nigeria.

“I dey come Naija very soon make una ready to arrest me for airport. Arrest no be new thing for the Ratel na,” VDM wrote in Pidgin, implying that arrests are nothing new to him and he is fully prepared for whatever may come.

Opinion: The Clashing of Fame, Influence, and Accountability

This unfolding drama once again highlights the tense relationship between influencers and celebrities in Nigeria. VeryDarkMan, known for his brash and often controversial social media persona, has never shied away from airing his views, even if they ruffle feathers.

However, his seeming disregard for legal summons raises pertinent questions about accountability and respect for the rule of law. While freedom of speech is a fundamental right, it's essential to recognize where that right ends and where defamation and slander begin.

On the other hand, one cannot ignore the possibility of this issue being blown out of proportion, especially given the highly publicized nature of the case. With VDM’s daring reaction, many are now wondering if this legal battle will escalate into something much bigger or if it will eventually be settled behind closed doors.

Ultimately, it’s a saga that captures the complicated reality of the modern-day social media age, where bold statements and legal consequences often clash.
