Toke Makinwa to Singles: “Don’t Lower Your Standards Due to Societal Pressure”

Popular Nigerian media personality, Toke Makinwa, has stirred discussions with her recent remarks urging singles not to compromise their standards when choosing a partner. Known for her outspoken nature and unapologetic views on relationships, Toke addressed the topic during the latest episode of her podcast, Toke Moments.

The media star highlighted that people should not allow societal expectations to dictate their choices when it comes to relationships. She emphasized that it is perfectly fine for a woman to prefer a man who provides financially and that men who are not comfortable with such arrangements should simply leave such women alone.

“You don’t need to lower your standard. There are over a billion people in this world. You can go and find somebody who has what you are looking for. Stop letting society dictate for you,” she said.

In her typically blunt manner, Toke added:

“If you say, ‘Oh, this girl is a money-hungry b*tch. All she wants is a man to pay her bills.’ If you can’t pay her bills, leave. There is another guy who that is what he is looking for.”

Opinion: Toke Makinwa’s Refreshing Take or Just More Controversy?

Toke’s viewpoint is bound to spark heated debates online, especially as it touches on issues of dependency, expectations, and the ever-controversial “gold digger” label.

However, her argument holds merit. Why should anyone settle for less than what they desire simply to conform to societal norms? As Toke pointed out, there are billions of people in the world. It’s more practical to focus on finding someone whose values and lifestyle align with yours, rather than molding yourself to fit the expectations of others.

But some critics might argue that her statements promote materialism over genuine connections. It’s a debate that stretches beyond culture and gender, tapping into the global discourse about relationship standards, financial expectations, and personal fulfillment.

Still, one truth remains: People should be true to themselves and seek what makes them genuinely happy. Whether Toke’s advice is embraced or dismissed, it certainly provides food for thought in the ongoing conversation about modern relationships.
