Hilda Dokubo Blasts President Tinubu Over State of Emergency Declaration in Rivers State

Hilda Dokubo Blasts President Tinubu Over State of Emergency Declaration in Rivers State

Veteran Nollywood actress and politician, Hilda Dokubo, has lashed out at Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, accusing him of plotting to “capture the economic soul of Rivers State” following the declaration of a State of Emergency in the oil-rich state.

Dokubo made her concerns known in a fiery post on her Instagram page, where she described the President’s actions as “shameless” and alleged that Tinubu’s motive is driven by economic control rather than genuine political intervention.

The declaration, which was announced during a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, has suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for a period of six months. Tinubu justified the drastic move by stating it was a response to the political crisis in the state.

However, Hilda Dokubo’s reaction reveals a different perspective. According to her:

“State of emergency because for two years we have had peace!
State of emergency because you want to capture the economic soul of Rivers State!
State of emergency because of one man?
Shameless! Perhaps Mr. President should say he wants to annex Rivers State.”

Taking her criticism further, the actress referenced the famous allegorical novel, “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, suggesting that the power tussle resembles the corrupt leadership depicted in the book.

“The Animal Farm by George Orwell should be given to every Rivers State citizen as palliative. Meantime, someone tell Mr. Jones to rein in his pigs.”

Opinion: Overreach or Necessary Intervention?

Hilda Dokubo’s strong words reflect the frustration and fear of many Rivers State citizens who view the State of Emergency as a ploy to seize control of the state’s vast economic resources. From her perspective, this intervention seems more like a power grab than a genuine effort to restore order.

While Tinubu argues that his decision was made in response to a political crisis, many are questioning the actual severity of the situation. If Rivers State has indeed enjoyed relative peace for two years, as Dokubo claims, then what justifies this drastic measure?

It’s also worth noting the symbolic power of her reference to Animal Farm. By likening Tinubu’s administration to the tyrannical characters in the novel, she paints a vivid picture of oppression and manipulation that resonates with her audience.

However, it is essential to consider the other side of the argument: Could there be a real security threat that prompted Tinubu’s action? Or is this move a strategic attempt to assert control over a critical state with enormous economic potential?

One thing is clear: The President’s declaration has sparked intense debate and reactions from citizens, politicians, and stakeholders alike. As the dust continues to settle, the nation eagerly waits to see whether Tinubu’s actions will bring about the desired stability or unleash even more chaos.
