Jaywon Advises Artists: ‘Nigerian Music Industry is Not for the Weak’

Afrobeats singer Jaywon has shared a piece of advice for fellow artists on handling social media trolls, urging them to develop a thick skin to survive in the Nigerian music industry.

Taking to his X handle on Sunday, Jaywon pointed out that even top superstars like Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy are constantly criticized, proving that no artist is immune to public scrutiny.

“Some of my colleagues call me to chat about the current state of the industry and how I handle all the ranting and disrespect online. My response is always the same: today’s industry is not for the weak,” he wrote.

Why Trolls Are Inevitable in the Entertainment Industry

Social media has become a double-edged sword for celebrities—offering a platform for exposure and success but also opening the floodgates for criticism, trolling, and cyberbullying.

Jaywon emphasized that artists must embrace the reality of the industry and not allow negative comments to push them offline, as social media is crucial for promoting their craft.

“Just look at the level of disrespect thrown at artists like Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and many others on social media. If you’re not prepared, you won’t last.”

Opinion: Should Celebrities Ignore Trolls or Engage?

Jaywon’s advice raises an interesting debate—should celebrities ignore trolls or respond to them?

  • Some artists like Wizkid often ignore negativity, choosing to focus on their music.

  • Others, like Davido and Burna Boy, have been known to clap back at trolls when necessary.

While it’s important not to let online criticism affect mental health, social media engagement is also key to building a loyal fanbase. Striking the right balance is crucial.

What do you think? Should artists fight back against trolls, or is it better to ignore them and focus on their craft? Let’s discuss! 👇🔥
