Controversial Streamer Peller Claims He’s Receiving Death Threats Over #30DayRants Stance
Popular but controversial TikTok streamer, Peller, has revealed that he has been receiving death threats following his opposition to the ongoing #30DayRants challenge, where Nigerians voice their frustrations about poor governance.
Peller, who urged citizens to halt the challenge, warned that continued criticism of the government could lead to TikTok being banned in Nigeria, a move that could affect his livelihood. His comments sparked outrage, with many accusing him of prioritizing personal gain over the people’s right to express themselves.
During a recent livestream, Peller claimed that he was being threatened, with some individuals warning him that he could meet the same fate as his late colleague, Oloba Salo, who was tragically shot in Lekki last year.
"I have been receiving death threats. Some people threatened to shoot me like they shot Salo in Lekki Phase 1. They asked me to watch my back when going out. What is all these? I’m not talking again. Goodbye," he said before abruptly ending his stream.
Free Speech or Fear?
Peller’s situation highlights the deep tensions surrounding political discourse in Nigeria. While his fears about a TikTok ban may be valid—given the Nigerian government’s history of restricting online platforms—many believe silencing criticism is not the solution.
The #30DayRants movement reflects growing frustration among Nigerians, and rather than discouraging it, some argue that influencers like Peller should amplify these voices instead of protecting the status quo. However, issuing threats over differences in opinion crosses the line, raising concerns about the dangers of online activism turning into real-world violence.
Should Peller have kept silent, or does he have a point? And at what point does online activism become a threat to national stability?
