Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle Returns to Europe for Player Scouting
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has returned to Europe as he continues his engagements with Nigeria’s overseas-based players while also scouting for new talents eligible to represent the country.
The 47-year-old tactician, who has so far overseen just two matches since taking charge—a 2-0 win against Rwanda and a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers—is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the next international break.
Fresh Faces on Chelle’s Radar?
One of the most exciting names reportedly under Chelle’s watch is Arsenal’s teenage sensation, Ethan Nwaneri. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season under Mikel Arteta, is still eligible to play for Nigeria despite having already represented England at youth level.
With Nigeria actively trying to convince dual-national players in recent years—such as Ademola Lookman and Folarin Balogun (before he chose the US)—Chelle’s visit could be crucial in swaying Nwaneri’s international future.
A Smart Move by Chelle?
Given the growing demands of international football, Chelle’s approach to reinforcing the Super Eagles with fresh talent is a step in the right direction. With players like Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, and Wilfred Ndidi already forming the core squad, adding young, dynamic talents like Nwaneri could be a game-changer.
However, the challenge remains—can Nigeria convince Nwaneri to commit to the Super Eagles instead of England? With England’s track record of capping young players early to prevent them from switching allegiances, Chelle and the NFF must act fast.
Would Nwaneri be a good addition to the Super Eagles, or should Chelle focus on players already committed to the team?
