Tiwa Savage Explains Why She Won’t Sign Up-and-Coming Artistes
Nigerian music queen, Tiwa Savage, has made it clear that she has no plans to sign emerging artists under her label, and her reason is simple—they are stressful.
Speaking in an interview with Forbes Africa, the 45-year-old singer revealed that while many expect her to nurture new talents, she doesn’t believe she has the patience or skill to handle their unpredictable behavior.
“Everyone always asks, ‘When are you going to sign an artiste?’ I don’t think I have the gift to sign artistes because they are stressful. I could just wake up from sleep and my artiste is trending for something else.”
Instead of running a label, Tiwa expressed her desire to set up a music school where young artists can develop their talent before being signed by labels that can properly manage them.
“But I have the gift to help, which is why I’m trying to have a music school, where artists can go and later sign to a label that can actually help.”
Opinion: Is Tiwa Savage Making the Right Call?
Tiwa’s statement has sparked mixed reactions in the music industry. Some people agree with her, pointing out that managing artists—especially rising stars—comes with a lot of drama, ego clashes, and controversies.
In Nigeria’s entertainment scene, we have seen cases of artists clashing with their record labels, from Kizz Daniel vs. G-Worldwide to Mohbad vs. Marlian Records. It takes a lot of patience, strategy, and emotional intelligence to manage young artists, and Tiwa seems to understand that it’s not her strength.
On the flip side, some critics believe that as one of the biggest female artists from Africa, Tiwa should be doing more to uplift the next generation. After all, other music heavyweights like Don Jazzy, Olamide, and Davido have successfully signed and nurtured young artists who have gone on to become stars.
Final Thoughts
Tiwa Savage’s honesty is refreshing—she knows her limits and is choosing to support young artists in a way that works for her. A music school could actually be a great idea, as it would give emerging talents a solid foundation before stepping into the music industry.
