“Being Called a Legend is a Scam” — RMD Opens Up on Why He Rejects the Title

“Being Called a Legend is a Scam” — RMD Opens Up on Why He Rejects the Title

Veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has stirred conversations in the entertainment scene with his unexpected take on the title “legend.” While many would proudly wear the badge, RMD says — not so fast.

Speaking on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast, the charismatic 63-year-old actor described being called a legend as a “scam,” explaining that it’s often used to quietly usher creatives into retirement mode — a place he’s clearly not ready to go.

“I think the legend of a thing is a scam,” RMD said with a smile. “I have my legends like Uncle Pete [Edochie] and Uncle Olu Jacobs… So I don’t subscribe to being called legend. When they call me that, I feel they are trying to relegate me to the neighbourhood of retired people or those nearing retirement.”

RMD’s perspective is refreshingly honest and, in a way, very telling of a man who still sees himself actively evolving, not settling into nostalgia. His statement doesn’t dismiss the honor behind the word “legend,” but rather, challenges the timing and intent behind when and how it’s used.

💬 Opinion: A Living Icon Who Still Wants to Live, Not Just Be Remembered

RMD's comments bring up a valid and rarely discussed topic — when do we start labeling our icons as “legends”? And does that label unintentionally start the countdown clock on their relevance?

It’s easy to throw around “legend” in a culture that celebrates longevity, but for actors like RMD — who are still delivering powerful roles, influencing fashion, mentoring younger talents, and remaining culturally impactful — maybe the term feels more like a curtain call than a crown.

He isn’t rejecting respect. He’s rejecting the boxed expectations that come with the word. And he’s doing it with flair.

📌 A Legend Still in Motion

Whether he likes the title or not, RMD's decades-long journey, from TV’s Ripples in the 80s to timeless Nollywood classics and present-day cinematic gems, has already earned him a seat in history. But perhaps the best way to honour him now is not with a title—but with space to keep creating, growing, and leading.

Because RMD isn't done telling stories. And if you’ve been watching closely, the best chapters might still be ahead.

🗣️ Sometimes, calling someone a legend is not enough. Sometimes, letting them live beyond the legend is the real respect.
