Peter Obi: Nigeria swinging dangerously away from true democracy

Peter Obi: Nigeria swinging dangerously away from true democracy

Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the February 25, 2023 election, has stated that transactional politics, disregard for the rule of law, and pervasive corruption in the administration, legislature, and judiciary are pushing Nigeria dangerously away from democracy.

Obi declared this in a series of messages on his X account (previously Twitter) on Friday, as Nigeria joined other countries around the world to commemorate the 2023 edition of International Democracy Day.

The LP candidate has now stated his intention to appeal the Presidential Election Petition Court's judgment to uphold the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) certification that President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress won the February 25 election.

"On this year's International Democracy Day, we must remind ourselves of the need to work together to build and deepen our nation's democracy," Obi wrote.

"As seen in the country today, the mindless erosion of the very ideals and tenets on which Nigeria's democracy was founded will only push the country deeper into lawlessness if not checked."

"The current trend of endemic corruption, constitutional abuse, disrespect for the rule of law, and transactional politics that cuts across the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government has continued to conflict with our nation's implementation of democracy."

"As a result, our dear nation has continued to veer dangerously close to the boundaries of true democracy." We are gradually losing one of the most important intangible qualities that make a nation strong: respect for the rule of law.

“I call on all Nigerians to remain committed to building and reinforcing our nation’s democracy. Once again, I restate my commitment to a new and truly democratic Nigeria. I am in this struggle solely for the betterment of our society.

“My vision of a new and truly democratic Nigeria is borne out of the deep conviction that Nigeria if given good leadership as I offer to give, will be beneficial to every Nigerian. We must not give up on our nation because a new and truly democratic Nigeria is possible.”
