AFCON 2025 Qualifier: Super Eagles Scrape Past Libya with Hard-Fought 1-0 Victory

AFCON 2025 Qualifier: Super Eagles Scrape Past Libya with Hard-Fought 1-0 Victory

The Super Eagles clinched a narrow 1-0 victory against Libya in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Uyo on Friday, thanks to a late goal from substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Nigeria started the match confidently, controlling possession but struggling to create clear-cut scoring opportunities. Alex Iwobi had the first chance for the Super Eagles, but his effort was well saved by Libyan goalkeeper Murad al Wuheeshi.

The pressure mounted as Nigeria continued to push for a breakthrough, with Al Wuheeshi again proving crucial as he denied Ademola Lookman’s attempt. Just two minutes before the half-hour mark, captain William Troost-Ekong also missed a golden opportunity, firing wide from inside the box.

Despite their dominance, Nigeria failed to convert their chances until Dele-Bashiru came off the bench to secure the win in the dying moments of the match, lifting the Super Eagles to the top of Group D in the qualifiers.

The visitors sat deep to absorb the pressure, relying on goalkeeper Murad al Wuheeshi to deny another chance from Alex Iwobi in the 40th minute.

After the break, the game was delayed for about five minutes to allow Al Wuheeshi to receive medical attention for an injury.

Despite creating several clear-cut opportunities, the Super Eagles struggled to find the back of the net until substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru finally broke the deadlock. Dele-Bashiru’s goal came five minutes later, courtesy of a well-placed assist from Moses Simon, sealing the crucial win for Nigeria.
