Tobi Adegboyega Defends Inviting Davido, Zlatan to His Birthday Bash, Labels Them Gospel Artistes

Tobi Adegboyega Defends Inviting Davido, Zlatan to His Birthday Bash, Labels Them Gospel Artistes

Flamboyant Nigerian pastor based in the United Kingdom, Tobi Adegboyega, has stirred conversations with his unconventional stance on gospel music and his choice of performers for his recent birthday celebration. Adegboyega, known for his opulent lifestyle and close relationships with celebrities, described renowned musician Davido as a gospel artiste.

Speaking on the Off The Record podcast, Adegboyega explained that gospel means "good news," and by that definition, Davido propagates positivity through his music. He cited Davido’s hit song Stand Strong as an example of the singer's inspirational messaging.

“Gospel means good news. Everyone there is a gospel artiste. Davido is a gospel artiste. Have you heard: ‘Because I stand strong?’” Adegboyega said while addressing criticism about his decision to invite secular musicians to his event.

The pastor revealed that the performers at his birthday bash, including Davido and Nigerian artist Zlatan, were his close friends who attended out of love, not for monetary gain. “What I had then was my friends—friends who are there through thick and thin. Davido told me: ‘I just want to be there and perform for one hour.’ They’re my friends. I didn’t pay any of them,” he disclosed.

Adegboyega also described Zlatan as more than just a friend, calling him “like a son” and sharing how deeply connected he is to the artist’s family. He dismissed critics who questioned his choice of performers, stating that he values loyalty and genuine relationships over adhering to rigid religious expectations.

“If gospel artistes aren’t my friends and are instead joining the bandwagon to criticize me by asking, ‘Is that a church?’ What should I do? Drag them with a rope?” he asked rhetorically.

Opinion: Redefining Gospel and Friendship in a Modern Context

Pastor Tobi Adegboyega’s perspective challenges traditional definitions of gospel music, inviting a broader interpretation that transcends genre and focuses on messaging. His claim that Davido and Zlatan are gospel artistes because they spread "good news" highlights how music, regardless of its style, can inspire and uplift listeners.

However, this approach has inevitably sparked debate within religious circles. Critics may argue that gospel music should remain distinctly spiritual and Christ-centered, while Adegboyega’s interpretation blurs these boundaries. Yet, his argument also opens the door for a more inclusive understanding of what constitutes “gospel.”

Adegboyega’s emphasis on friendship and loyalty as the foundation for his choices reflects a deeply personal approach to life and ministry. Rather than conforming to societal expectations, he prioritizes authenticity and relationships, a principle that resonates with many in today’s fast-paced, often impersonal world.

While his critics may question his methods, Adegboyega’s bold stance highlights the evolving landscape of faith and community in a globalized world. By blending tradition with modernity, he continues to push boundaries, ensuring that his message—whether through sermons or birthday celebrations—remains impactful and relevant.
