Coach Lasisi Mayowa, often known as Coach Mayor in the boxing community, is currently dealing with a severe kidney ailment that requires immediate medical attention, prompting a plea for help from boxing fans.

Mayowa, a respected boxing figure, was brought to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja on Sunday, April 21, due to a deteriorating condition.

His wife, Funmilayo, who is by his side in the hospital, stated, "His (Mayowa's) health is quite bad, and we are still waiting for test results.

"The doctors have indicated that they cannot determine the cost of treatment until the necessary tests are completed."

Mayowa need extensive therapy, and his existing financial means are insufficient to afford the costs. In light of this, he and his wife have requested financial aid to guarantee that he obtains the appropriate medical attention.

The boxing community has already rallied around Mayowa, with over N40,000 donated by certain members of the AIBA PRO BOXING Whatsapp Group, which also helped late boxer and coach Jeremiah Okorodudu last year.

Funmilayo expressed her gratitude to those who have provided support, saying, "I want to thank everyone who has sent money to us; my family and I greatly appreciate it." The contributions and prayers have been essential, and we hope for ongoing support."

Babatunde Laguda, Technical Director of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, told our correspondent that Mayowa was admitted to the hospital when his health deteriorated.

"He was stable earlier, but his condition worsened on Sunday, and they had to take him to the hospital. I did my best and found a means to send the information on our Whatsapp Group, where they have received some aid.

"He is a good coach and we hope his condition gets better," he remarked.

Coach Mayowa has developed several boxers from his club in Lagos and was a founding member of the YUCATECO Boxing League. His children also competed, with his son and daughter receiving medals at the 2023 National Youth Festival in Asaba, Delta State.
