Monaco's defeat at Lyon gifts Paris Saint-Germain Ligue 1 crown for 12th time

Paris Saint-Germain won the French championship for the record 12th time on Sunday night, defeating second-placed Monaco 3-2 in Lyon.

Adi Hütter's side needed to win at the Groupama Stadium to keep the Ligue 1 title battle alive for at least another 10 days while also improving their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

They got off to a terrific start when Wissam Ben Yedder scored in the first few seconds.

However, they were hit by two goals in four minutes from Lyon captain Alexandre Lacazette and Said Benrahma.

Though Ben Yedder equalised after 60 minutes, Lacazette put up Malick Fofana for the winner.

The victory maintained Lyon in contention for a spot in next season's European Conference League.

Despite the setback, Monaco remains second with 58 points. Brest is two points behind in third after a 5-4 victory against Rennes. And Lille is in contention for a Champions League spot with 55 points following their 2-1 victory at Metz.

That battle, as well as the race to avoid relegation to Ligue 2, will dominate the final three games of the 2023/24 season.

On Saturday night at the Parc des Princes, PSG failed to clinch the title in front of their own fans after rallying from 3-1 down to tie 3-3 with relegation-threatening Le Havre.

PSG's recent Ligue 1 titles their tally of trophies to 32 since Qatar Sports Investments took over the club in 2011.

Luis Enrique, who replaced Christophe Galtier in July, has won his second trophy of the 2023-2024 season.

In January, PSG defeated Toulouse to win the French Super Cup.

They will face Lyon in the Coupe de France final on May 25th, and Borussia Dortmund on May 1st and 7th for a spot in the Champions League final this season.

"Winning the league is fantastic," stated PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi. "Winning it for the 12th time makes it much more special for everyone at PSG.

"Congratulations to all of the players, our coach, and his crew. Since the beginning of the season, the team has been extremely cohesive and bonded.

"I will never be the  forget the fans who have been amazing whatever the result. We will treasure this moment and also continue to work hard match by match until the last moment of the season."
