Why Fela Married 27 Women In One Day – Seun Kuti
Seun Kuti, a Grammy-nominated Afrobeat artist, has explained why his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a pioneer of the Afrobeats genre, married 27 women in one day.
According to TalkTalk Nigeria News, Fela married 27 ladies in one day in 1978, which was considered a bold gesture at the time.
Seun spoke about the incident during a Skype interview with the 'Fresh Off The Boat' podcast, claiming that his late father was always active in media propaganda.
According to the singer, the media had previously labeled Fela's female dancers and band members who lived with him as prostitutes.
Seun Kuti went on to say that his father married all 27 women in one day in order to maintain their honor and dignity.
He stated, "My father was subjected to intense media indoctrination. He was closely inspected. The most of it was intended toward the women in his life, specifically his female backup singers and dancers. They all resided with my father, but the media began branding them prostitutes.
"So, in order to protect their honor and dignity, my father asked them if they wanted to be his wives so that no one would call them names anymore, and they all consented. That is how the marriage occurred."
