Giroud to quit int’l football after Euro 2024

Olivier Giroud, France's all-time leading scorer, has announced his retirement from international duty following the Euro 2024 championship in Germany.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea forward was included to Didier Deschamps' tentative Euros team.

"To be honest, this will be my final competition with Les Bleus." "Obviously, I'll miss it a lot," Giroud told L'Equipe in an interview published on Thursday.

"But I believe the French team will be finished after the Euros. We must make way for the young people. You also need to be careful not to have too many seasons. You need to strike the appropriate balance.

"I've always said that I would stop when my body told me to. I believe I have two good years remaining. But as far as the French team is concerned, I believe that's it," the 37-year-old remarked.
France, who were eliminated by Switzerland in the final 16 of Euro 2020, last won the championship in 2000. They will play Austria in their Euros group stage opener on June 17, followed by the Netherlands and Poland.


When asked if he had any goals for the European Championship, Giroud replied, "No, I don't." I'm motivated by the ambition to outperform this generation.

"With the exception of the Premier League, which is challenging to win, I would consider myself to have won everything." After then, I heard a lot about the national team's 60-goal total. We are watching, but it is not an obsession."

Giroud, who leads the French football team with 57 goals in 131 games, will be out of contract at the San Siro next month.
He has, however, committed to join American Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC following the Euros.
