‘I had writer’s block for six months’ – Ayra Starr
Ayra Starr, a Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer and composer, has spoken up about her struggles with writer's block and how they affected her.
The 'Rush' singer revealed that she couldn't write songs for nearly six months until she received a demo of her song '21' off her new album, 'The Year I Turned 21,' as a birthday gift from a friend, which opened her mind.
"I got the demo of '21' from a friend as a birthday gift the day I turned 21," she explained in a viral podcast interview.
"I told him it was very hard... I had a writer's block for six months. I couldn't write about myself, so he handed me the first version of the song as a demo for my birthday gift. Recording ’21’ was quite easy for me, I did it in one-take. I was even lying down with the mic in my hand.
“’21’ is special because it is what opened my mind to the rest of the album. With ’21’ I started to see myself again the way I wanted to see myself.”
