Maiden South East, South South Volleyball Championship kicks off in Umuahia
The inaugural South East/South South volleyball tournament has begun in Umuahia, with Team Abia currently leading.
Governor Alex Otti declared the competition open in the Umuahia Township stadium's indoor hall, challenging the athletes to be professional while expressing the government's serious interest in sports development.
The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, stated that the event will help kids uncover their potential and gain international fame.
He thanked the National President of the Volleyball Association for giving Abia State the opportunity to host the inaugural South-East/South-South volleyball tournament.
Nkechi Ezugwu, Nigeria Volleyball Federation's 2nd Vice President and Chairman of the League Management Committee, urged participating teams, coaches, and officials to conduct themselves professionally and with sportsmanship.
She praised Gov. Alex Otti for sponsoring the championship.
Mr. George Obioma, the State Director of Sports, expressed confidence that with the competition, the South East and South South would bounce back in volleyball in Nigeria, adding that Abia youths may take advantage of opportunities to play professionally abroad.
