Ahead of the Kano State Local Government Council election in October 2024, the Kano State High Court has ordered the All Progressives Congress, APC, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and 19 other political parties to stop preventing the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC, from collecting nomination fees from applicants.

Previously, KANSIEC had issued nomination and expression of interest forms for chairperson and councillor posts for N10 and N5 million, respectively, prompting protests from political parties who regarded the costs as exorbitant.

The demonstration resulted in legal intervention from the court. In the case of KANSIEC, political parties argued in their answer that it should be cut despite the fact that there was little time before the October elections.

After hearing arguments from Rilwanu Umar Esq., R.I. Yaura Esq., and Mustapha Oseni Esq., representing the plaintiffs, the court found in favor of KANSIEC, imposing an interim order that allows the commission to carry out its statutory duties.

The political parties were constrained by a court order that prohibits them from taking any actions that might prevent the electoral authority from organizing, conducting, regulating, and supervising the local elections.

The court's judgment assures that preparations for the October elections can proceed undisturbed, until additional hearings.

The motion on notice will be heard on October 10, 2024.
