May D Reflects on His Time with Psquare and Davido: "It Was About My Future"

May D Reflects on His Time with Psquare and Davido: "It Was About My Future"

Nigerian Afropop singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, better known as May D, has opened up about his experiences with Square Records, the music label owned by R&B duo Psquare, and his encounter with superstar Davido.

Speaking during an episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, May D revealed why he turned down a contract with Square Records despite their fame and success. The decision, he explained, was influenced by his living arrangements during his collaboration with the duo.

May D disclosed that he lived in the boys’ quarters of Psquare's house—a situation that, to him, did not signify personal or professional growth.

“If I sign an artist who’s already successful, there are many things I would put in place for them. It doesn’t have to be a house, but at least something fitting,” May D said.

He added, “A flat wasn’t too much to ask for. I started reflecting on my life when people visited and questioned my situation. It wasn’t about luxury; it was about my future and self-worth.”

Davido’s Visit: A Surprising Perspective

May D also recounted a striking moment with Davido, who once sought refuge at his place while avoiding his father. According to May D, Davido was taken aback by the conditions of his accommodation.

“David was running from his dad and told me, ‘Guy, I might have to stay at your place because my dad has blocked me from all hotels in Nigeria.’ I suggested he come to Psquare’s house and stay in my room,” May D recounted.

However, Davido was reportedly shocked by the living arrangements, saying, “May D, is this really where you live? I can’t stay here.”

Opinion: The Cost of Growth and Self-Respect

May D’s revelations highlight a critical aspect of the music industry: the balance between talent and the conditions provided for growth. His decision to reject the contract speaks to a broader issue of self-worth and long-term planning in an industry where opportunities are often clouded by the allure of association with big names.

While living in the boys’ quarters might seem trivial to some, May D’s perspective underscores the importance of environment in fostering creativity and growth. For an artist with ambition, feeling valued and supported is as crucial as financial investment.

Davido’s reaction further validates May D’s concerns, serving as a reminder that respect and dignity should not be sacrificed for temporary gains.

A Lesson for Aspiring Artists

May D’s story is a testament to the importance of standing firm on personal values and long-term vision. Aspiring artists can draw inspiration from his resolve to prioritize growth over immediate gratification.

In an industry filled with glitz and glamour, it’s essential to remember that true success is built on a foundation of respect, opportunity, and self-belief. May D’s journey continues to remind us that growth begins with recognizing one’s worth.
