Nigerian Secondary School Flag Football League Season 3: Aketi Bowl II Kicks Off in Calabar

No fewer than 180 secondary school students are showcasing their skills in the much-anticipated Season 3 of the Nigerian Secondary School Flag Football League (NSSFFL) – Aketi Bowl II, popularly known as the American Flag Football Championship.

The two-day championship began on Wednesday at the iconic UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar. Organized in collaboration with the Cross River State Government, the event has drawn participants from nine states, representing 18 schools and a total of 36 teams.

The Akwa Ibom male team, the reigning champions from the previous season held in Akure, Ondo State, are back to defend their title. The stakes are high, and the competition promises thrilling displays of talent, teamwork, and determination.

A Platform for Growth and Opportunity

Addressing journalists at the event, Babajide Akeredolu, National President of the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA), highlighted the league’s growth and its transformative impact on young athletes.

“The journey has been remarkable, and Aketi Bowl II promises to be the crowning achievement of a season that has brought American football closer to the hearts of Nigerians,” Akeredolu said.

He emphasized the league’s focus on creating opportunities, including educational and sports scholarships, for participating athletes. Notably, two players from Cross River have already secured scholarships in U.S. universities, underscoring the league’s success in bridging sports and education.

Calabar: A Welcoming Host

Samuel Egbala, Permanent Secretary in the Cross River State Ministry of Youths and Sports, expressed pride in Calabar hosting the championship. “We are committed to providing a conducive environment for the event. This is an opportunity for us to celebrate young talent and showcase the potential of our state as a hub for sports development,” he said.

Opinion: A Bright Future for Flag Football in Nigeria

The NSSFFL’s rapid growth is a testament to the untapped potential of American flag football in Nigeria. Beyond the sport itself, the league serves as a platform for character building, leadership, and academic advancement. By focusing on scholarships and international exposure, it inspires young athletes to dream big and work hard, knowing their efforts could open doors to global opportunities.

Furthermore, hosting the Aketi Bowl II in Calabar reflects a strategic move to decentralize sports development in Nigeria, bringing exciting events to different parts of the country. This not only boosts local economies but also fosters community pride and encourages grassroots participation in sports.

Final Thoughts

As the NSSFFL continues to evolve, it is poised to become a cornerstone of youth development in Nigeria, blending sports, education, and opportunity. The Aketi Bowl II is more than a competition—it is a celebration of potential, unity, and the power of sports to shape lives.

With the championship in full swing, fans eagerly await to see if the Akwa Ibom team will retain their title or if a new champion will emerge, adding another layer of excitement to this inspiring event.
