Portland Thorns Confirm Nicole Payne to Miss 2025 Season Due to Injury
Super Falcons defender Nicole Payne has been ruled out of the 2025 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season after suffering a cruciate ligament injury during Portland Thorns’ pre-season friendly against Angel City FC on February 16.
Injury Blow for Portland Thorns
Payne is not the only player sidelined, as Morgan Weaver and Marrie Muller have also been ruled out for the season due to injuries.
Marrie Muller sustained a cruciate ligament injury while on international duty with Germany on February 19.
Morgan Weaver suffered a right knee injury in January 2025, the same knee she had surgery on in May 2024.
Payne’s Journey with Portland Thorns
The 24-year-old Nigerian defender joined Portland Thorns on loan from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) last year and made 10 league appearances under head coach Robert Gale.
Her absence will be a significant setback for the team as they prepare for the new NWSL season.
