Calvin Bassey Opens Up on Choosing Nigeria Over England and Italy

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has finally shared the inspiration behind his decision to represent Nigeria on the international stage, despite being eligible for Italy and England. The Fulham star, who was born in Italy to Nigerian parents and raised in England, committed to the Nigerian national team in 2021—turning down interest from the two European nations.

Bassey revealed that his defining moment came while watching Nigeria take on Lionel Messi’s Argentina at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The match, which ended in a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat for the Super Eagles, ignited a deep sense of belonging and ambition within him.

“I think it was just seeing the greatest player to ever play, playing against my team. [Nigeria] lost 2-1,” Bassey told NBC Sports.

“I think one of my teammates that I played with, Kenneth Omeruo, played that game. Just watching that game, I wanted to be in that position.

“I know how big of a nation Nigeria is and how much pride comes with playing for them. I just worked hard. When I got the opportunity, I didn’t take time [to decide] — I just knew that I wanted to play for Nigeria.”

Since making his debut, Bassey has become a key figure in the Super Eagles setup, earning 29 caps and playing a vital role in Nigeria’s silver medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

Opinion: Bassey’s Passion for Nigeria a Lesson for Dual-Nationals

In an era where many dual-national footballers deliberate extensively before choosing their international allegiance, Bassey’s decision to embrace Nigeria without hesitation is refreshing. His story underscores the emotional connection and pride associated with donning the green and white jersey—something that should inspire other young players of Nigerian descent.

Too often, African nations lose top talents to European countries, where promises of top-level competition and financial benefits lure them away. However, Bassey’s case proves that playing for one's ancestral home is about more than just career moves—it’s about identity, passion, and national pride.

With the Super Eagles now a mix of homegrown and foreign-born stars, Bassey’s commitment and fighting spirit serve as a reminder that Nigeria’s footballing future remains bright—so long as players choose to play with their hearts, not just their heads.
