Spanish Footballer Nico Hidalgo Passes Away at 32 After Battle with Cancer

Spanish football has been hit with tragic news as former midfielder Nico Hidalgo has passed away at the age of 32 following a prolonged battle with lung cancer. His former clubs confirmed his death on Saturday, marking a sorrowful moment for the football community.

Hidalgo, who started his career at Motril, made his senior debut in 2010 before moving to Granada B in 2012. His potential caught the eye of Juventus, who signed him in 2014, though he never made a first-team appearance for the Italian giants. Instead, he was loaned back to Granada, where he continued his development.

The talented midfielder later moved to Cádiz on loan before making the switch permanent in 2017. His career also saw stints with Racing Santander and Extremadura before he retired from football in 2022, a year after his cancer diagnosis.

His former clubs paid heartfelt tributes, reflecting on his impact both on and off the pitch.

“With Nico’s departure, not only has an excellent footballer gone, but also a great person. But the affection of his teammates, coaches, staff, directors, and fans will always be present,” Granada stated.

“We will never forget your smile and your joy. Your fight is our inspiration. Rest in peace,” Cádiz posted on X.

Opinion: A Life Cut Short, But an Inspiration Left Behind

Nico Hidalgo’s passing is a painful reminder that life’s battles extend beyond the football field. At just 32, he had so much more to give, but his courageous fight against cancer exemplified the same resilience he displayed as a player.

While many will remember his skills and contributions to Spanish football, his determination and positive spirit in the face of adversity are perhaps his greatest legacy. Stories like his highlight the human side of football—beyond the trophies and glory, there are real people with real struggles.

Hidalgo may no longer be with us, but his journey and fight will continue to inspire those facing their own battles. Rest in peace, Nico.
