Skales Appreciates Banky W for Sponsoring His University Education, Dedicates Degree to Late Mother
Nigerian singer and songwriter, Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, popularly known as Skales, has extended heartfelt gratitude to his former record label boss, Bankole Wellington (Banky W), for his pivotal role in sponsoring his university education. The appreciation came as Skales recently received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, years after his graduation.
Taking to his X handle on Thursday, the ‘Shake Body’ crooner shared a snapshot of his long-awaited certificate, dedicating it to his late mother, whose memory he clearly holds dear.
He wrote:
“Aye my BSc showed up after many years of graduation! This is for my mother and thank you to @BankyW for sponsoring the boy through school.”
The gesture from Banky W, who led Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E), is yet another testament to the positive impact he has had on the lives of young artists beyond music. Skales signed a record deal with E.M.E in 2009 and remained with the label until his contract expired in 2014.
Interestingly, it is widely believed that Banky W enrolled both Skales and his former label mate, Wizkid, at Lead City University. However, while Skales managed to complete his studies, Wizkid eventually dropped out to focus entirely on his music career.
Opinion: More Than Just Music—A Lesson in Genuine Support
It’s not every day we hear artists celebrating their mentors for efforts that go beyond studio sessions and hit tracks. Skales’ public appreciation of Banky W is a refreshing and inspiring reminder that the entertainment industry isn’t all cutthroat competition.
Banky W’s gesture was not just an investment in a budding artist’s talent but also in his personal growth and future. It speaks volumes about his character and mentorship philosophy. How many record label bosses would sponsor their signees through university and support their educational pursuits despite knowing that fame and fortune could easily distract them?
In a world where stories of betrayal and unfulfilled contracts are common between artists and their record labels, this revelation highlights a beautiful story of genuine mentorship, kindness, and growth.
Skales’ dedication of his degree to his late mother adds a deeply emotional layer to this moment. It shows that despite his success in the music industry, he still cherishes and values the achievements that truly matter.
Perhaps, this should inspire other prominent figures to support and uplift young talents not only in their craft but also in pursuing their personal dreams and aspirations. And maybe, just maybe, we could use more stories like this to remind us of the humanity that still exists in the entertainment industry.
