Sola Allyson Advocates for Women’s Financial Independence, Sparks Reactions
Renowned Nigerian gospel singer, Sola Allyson, has shared her strong stance on women’s financial independence in relationships, a position that has ignited conversations across social media.
In a recently released video, Allyson emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency for women, recounting her personal experience during a past relationship with a wealthy boyfriend. Her approach to money from her partner was clear: only accept what is genuinely needed and nothing more.
Allyson stated that she consistently declined her boyfriend’s offers of financial support and whenever she accepted assistance, she ensured it was only the exact amount needed. Any excess money given was returned promptly to her partner.
The Singer’s Story
“I was once in a relationship where my boyfriend was very rich. When he wants to give me money, I won’t collect it. On the days when I need money, if it’s N500 I need and he gives me N5000, I will remove the N500 and give him his N4500 back,” Allyson recounted.
Her comments quickly attracted varying reactions online, with some applauding her discipline while others found her approach outdated or unrealistic.
Mixed Reactions from Social Media
Some followers were quick to celebrate her stance:
@Mima_the_1st: “Wetin I go do now, na to call igwe make them organize award for you.”
@Moren.dstall: “In this T-Pain regime, oya nao.”
Others, however, expressed skepticism and humor over the practicality of her principle:
@Eniola___sarah: “Mommy, why I go Dey reject free money? Na your time be that ooo.”
@Jhay_porch: “Immediately you toast Naija babe her rent go just expire asap and she dey hungry at the end she go come tell you say I have a boyfriend.”
Opinion: Financial Independence or Misplaced Pride?
Allyson’s message of financial independence is one many women today can relate to. In a society where the financial burden of relationships often falls on men, her approach challenges the norm. The idea of being able to provide for oneself and not depending on a partner’s wealth is empowering and teaches dignity and respect.
However, it’s also worth asking whether rejecting financial gifts outright from a willing partner is a display of independence or simply misplaced pride. True financial independence should not necessarily mean rejecting help when offered in genuine goodwill. Rather, it should be about making conscious choices and ensuring one's worth and capabilities are not defined by another person’s wealth.
Sola Allyson’s message is valuable in encouraging women to stay grounded, but a balanced approach to financial support in relationships is equally crucial. There’s nothing wrong with accepting gifts, as long as they do not compromise one’s self-worth or integrity.
