Sola Allyson Fires Back at Critics Over ‘Jesus’ Controversy in Her Songs

Sola Allyson Fires Back at Critics Over ‘Jesus’ Controversy in Her Songs

Popular gospel singer, Sola Allyson, has responded to social media critics who accused her of not mentioning the name “Jesus” in her songs.

The controversy erupted after gospel legend Panam Percy Paul revealed in an interview that he was once offered £24 million in 1995 to remove “Jesus” from his music. This revelation sparked a debate, with an X user, @Folahanayo1, calling out Allyson for supposedly omitting Jesus' name in her 2019 album, "IRI."

Allyson Claps Back: "I Don't Want Your Kind of Jesus"

In response, Allyson took to X (formerly Twitter), posting a video where she questioned the motives of her critics and stated that her faith is personal and not subject to public validation.

"Why are you people this callous and unkind? Is it until I commit suicide? If this is what you are with your own Jesus, I do not want to be identified with you lots!"

She further rejected being bullied into conforming to anyone's religious expectations, emphasizing that her music is deeply rooted in her faith and personal convictions.

“Once again, no one can bully me into joining their darkness that looks like light because indolent souls find comfort in it. I do NOT seek to be with your kind of Jesus. Leave me alone and face your own journey.”

Opinion: Faith Is Personal, Not Performative

The backlash against Sola Allyson raises an important question: Is faith only valid if expressed in a particular way? Must a gospel artist repeatedly say “Jesus” to prove their devotion?

Her response highlights a growing concern about performative Christianity, where faith is judged based on public declarations rather than personal conviction. Some of the most impactful gospel songs focus on themes of love, hope, and trust in God—even without explicitly mentioning “Jesus” in every line.

At the heart of the matter, music is a form of expression, and Allyson's artistry should be respected for what it is—a heartfelt outpouring of her faith, values, and experiences.

In the end, isn’t faith more about how we live than how often we say a name?
