Ruger Reflects on His Musical Roots: “I Started in the Church Choir”
Afrobeats sensation Ruger has revealed that his musical journey began in the church choir, a foundation that significantly shaped his vocal skills.
Speaking on a recent episode of Apple Music’s "Africa Now", the Bounce hitmaker shared that while his vocal ability isn’t always the focal point of his recorded tracks, those who have seen him perform live know just how much he can deliver.
"Only people who have experienced me perform live have had the opportunity to enjoy my vocals. Even in my music, I don’t necessarily show it off."
Ruger explained that his time in the church choir helped him master the art of singing, especially when performing songs that deeply resonate with him.
"My favourite time being Ruger is when I’m performing on stage because I get to do whatever I like with my songs. I started from the choir. I know how to sing, especially when it is a song that resonates deeply with me."
Opinion: The Church Choir—A Hidden Training Ground for Afrobeats Stars
Ruger's revelation isn’t surprising, as many top Nigerian artists, including Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and Simi, also honed their skills in church choirs before breaking into mainstream music.
The church is often an unspoken talent incubator, offering young artists the opportunity to develop vocal control, stage confidence, and music structure. While many transition to secular music, the discipline and training they receive in church often remain evident in their careers.
Ruger’s journey highlights a truth about music: raw talent is important, but proper grooming and experience make the difference. And for many Nigerian stars, the church was their first stage. 🎶🔥
