Peter Obi Reacts to Super Eagles’ Disappointing Draw Against Zimbabwe
The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has weighed in on the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
Obi, who was present at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo to watch the match, maintained that the team performed well despite conceding a 90th-minute equalizer that left fans frustrated.
"You Can't Blame the Coach or Players" – Obi
Addressing journalists after the game, Obi defended the team, insisting that neither the coach nor the players should be blamed for the disappointing result.
“If you look at the players, they were good, they were excellent,” Obi said.
“You can’t, in any way, blame the coach or the players. Sometimes, this happens in life.”
His remarks contrast sharply with the outcry from fans, many of whom have taken to social media to criticize the team’s performance and their dwindling chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
Nigeria's World Cup Hopes Hanging by a Thread
With the draw, the Super Eagles remain in fourth place in Group C, behind leaders South Africa, Benin Republic, and Rwanda. With only a few games left, Nigeria’s chances of making it to the World Cup are now in serious jeopardy.
Opinion: Is Obi Too Soft on the Super Eagles?
While Obi’s diplomatic response reflects his leadership style, many fans believe Nigeria’s national team must be held accountable for their underwhelming performances. The team’s inconsistency and defensive lapses have cost them crucial points, and unless drastic improvements are made, the Super Eagles could miss back-to-back World Cups—a disaster for Nigerian football.
With the road to 2026 still open, the real question remains: Can the Super Eagles recover, or will this be another heartbreak for Nigerian football fans?
