Troost-Ekong Takes Responsibility for Costly Error in Super Eagles’ Draw Against Zimbabwe
Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has accepted responsibility for the defensive blunder that led to Zimbabwe’s last-minute equalizer in Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
Nigeria was on the verge of securing a much-needed victory after Victor Osimhen’s 74th-minute goal, which came from an Ola Aina cross. However, in stoppage time, Tawanda Chirewa capitalized on a defensive lapse, dribbling past Troost-Ekong before slotting the ball under goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, securing a 1-1 draw for Zimbabwe.
Troost-Ekong Responds to Criticism
Following the game, fans took to social media to criticize Troost-Ekong’s defending, questioning how he allowed Chirewa to breeze past him so easily.
Acknowledging his mistake, the 2023 AFCON MVP took to X (formerly Twitter) to own up to his error:
“Responsibility taken. Same target ahead. We will do it together! Nigeria Super Eagles.”
Nigeria’s World Cup Qualification Hopes in Jeopardy
This result leaves Nigeria in fourth place in Group C, trailing behind South Africa, Benin Republic, and Lesotho. With just four matches left, the Super Eagles’ qualification path has become significantly more challenging.
Who Should Take the Blame?
While Troost-Ekong has taken responsibility, many fans and pundits believe the problem goes beyond one defensive lapse. Questions have been raised about:
Nigeria’s tactical approach under Eric Chelle
Midfield struggles, as pointed out by South African pundit Mbizo Mzamane
Defensive frailties, especially in key moments
What Next for the Super Eagles?
Nigeria must bounce back quickly, with their next World Cup qualifier set for September against Rwanda. If the Super Eagles fail to win, their dreams of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico could fade away.
Can Nigeria turn things around before it’s too late? Or will this campaign go down as one of the country’s biggest disappointments? 🤔⚽🔥
